Living Through Adventure

Before finishing University my experiences outside of my small bubble of life was very limited. I still consider my experiences pretty limited, but that is just because I have an understanding (at least a small understanding) of how much there is out there in the world.

Before the completion of my 3rd year of University, I had never been on an airplane before. I had traveled only to places close to the Ontario border within the United States, all of which were day trips.

Maple Syrup Festival

While I was in Korea I was interested in seeing what some of my students thought a stereotype of Canada may be. Often one of the top answers is Maple Syrup. This makes sense considering the Maple Leaf on the Canadian flag. My Korean students were not alone in these thoughts.

Every year my small town of Watford Ontario has a Maple Syrup Festival. I have always taken it for granted as not a big deal (still really enjoy eating at it though). But perhaps in other parts of the world it is a pretty cool festival.

Things to do in Winter

I have waited all winter to write about some fun things to do in winter. It isn't all cold and boring, there are a lot of things to do. The best part of all is these things are inexpensive and often free.

One tradition at my house, usually during the first snow fall, is snow candy for dessert. It is really easy to do, and can satisfy the sweet tooth and make your Dentist cringe. The first step is to fill a pan with fresh fallen snow. Obviously the fresh fallen snow has not had time to get dirty or peed on by wandering animals.

Boryeong Mud Festival

One unique experience I had in Korea was a summer mud festival in Boryeong. It was a ton of fun.

Boryeong is located on the Yellow Sea on the west coast of South Korea.  Daecheon beach has mud that apparently has cosmetic properties. I guess that is the point of the whole festival.  I went by myself, not with a specific group of people, but knowing a lot of people who were going.

American Village Videos

I cannot take credit for these videos, but I thought I would share them on here. If you remember from a prior post, I shared Ace's videos of first session. He has made videos for second session and once again they are fantastic. Perhaps that is just my opinion because they bring back fond memories for me.

Blue Mountain (New South Wales)

While in Sydney, I also did a day trip to the mountain range just outside the city. I once again went through a travel agency to do the trip and met another mixture of people from a variety of cultures. The tour guy was a young guy who reminded me of Alan from The Hangover. He had a full beard and was a little strange, said exactly what he was thinking at times. The first thing he asked a couple pretty girls traveling together from England was if they were lesbians. A good ice breaker, I guess.

Sydney Australia

If you remember from my posts about other cities--Berlin, Prague and Munich for example--I went on 'free' tours there, where there was no price for the tour and the tour guides relied on only tips.

The first of these trips I ever did happened in Sydney Australia. I don't recall the girls name, but unlike most of the tour guides in Europe she was native to not only the country, but the city itself. She was also quite cute. Unfortunately, the material she had to work with was inferior to the places I visited in Europe, mostly because the history wasn't as rich and the country wasn't touched by war. Not a bad thing, but that doesn't make it interesting.
